LES 100

LES 100 is the introductory course in the Licensing Executives Society’s Intellectual Asset Management Series. It is designed for those who are relatively new to licensing. The course provides attendees with an overview of intellectual property and licensing, divided into five modules, with examples, exercises, and interaction between instructors and fellow students including a mock licensing negotiation.

How can a National Society conduct the course?

  1. The interested LES chapter is contacting the LESI Education committee.

     

  2. A Course information package will be made available to the member society, including access to the course materials for adaptation and/or translation to local law and requirements. The soft copies of all course materials must be kept strictly confidential. There are also organizational guidelines and templates for marketing material and certificates included.

     

  3. Intructors: It is ideal to teach the course with at least 2 experienced instructors, the one having a strong legal background and the other a strong commercial or business background. A list of qualified instructors is part of the course information package provided in step 2 It is recommended to National Societies to build up their own qualified instructors group. Instructor candidates have to attend the LES100 course once themselves and then take part in a halfday Train the Trainer course instructor qualification workshop.

     

  4. The organisation, advertisement and pricing of the course is in the responsibility of the National LES Society.

     

  5. There is an automatic grant back of a royalty free license of any adaptations and translations of the course materials to LESI and LES South Africa, and all adaptations and translations of the course material must be delivered to the LESI Education Committee or staff.

What does the course cover?

An overview of IP and IP Licensing, divided into five Modules, with examples, exercises and interaction between instructors and fellow students in each Module:

Module 1: Introduction & IP Basics: This Module introduces, defines and gives examples of the different types of IP including patents, trademarks, copyright, designs and trade secrets in the context of commercialisation.

Module 2: Basics of IP Commercialisation & Licensing: Introduction to Licensing, including reasons for licensing, description of licensing agreements, infringement, competition law, and relationshipbuilding

Module 3: Determining Reasonable Licence Fees & Royalty Rates: This Module talks about risks and rewards, different valuation methods (Market, Financial, Cost) and their pros and cons, together with royalty structures.

Module 4: Managing Risks: Identify the different kinds of risk and how to manage them, i.e. confidentiality, infringement, liability, collection of royalties and other fees.

Module 5: Licensing Game: Students put into practice what they have learned by dividing into licensee and licensor teams that then discuss and negotiate terms on a licensing case study. At the end of the sessions all teams report their results and reasoning.

Who is the target audience?

The course is designed for inventors, business people involved in IP exploitation, legal advisors, students, academics, licensing and technology transfer professionals, etc

Students interested in learning the basics of IP and how to commercialise IP through licensing.

How long is the course?

The course is designed to run over one full day or, alternatively, two half days.

As with all LES courses, LES 100 is designed to be delivered by LES volunteers who are active practitioners in their fields. There is a list of qualified instructors available at the LESI Education committee.
