Ichiro Nakatomi, Ph.D.
Dr. Ichiro Nakatomi acts as according to his experience in the divisions of entrepreneur, startup planning, financial management, IP management, product development and business development in healthcare industry as well as science university. He is Founder & President of Avida Science*, Co-founder & Advisor of NanoCarrier, Special Advisor of Oji Holdings and Oji Pharma, Advisor of Tokyo University of Science and Board of Director of OP Nano, etc.
As social activity he serves as President 2022-2023 of Licensing Executive Society International (LESI). He is a member of Advisory Board for Promotion of Medical Ventures in Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
He has about 40 years of professional experience on the research and development of new drug and drug delivery technology, intellectual property, global business licensing and joint development, global finance, establishment of company, Initial Public Offering, and management/leadership in global pharmaceutical and biotech industries. He also has experience of new material development for cosmetic product in planning and electronic commerce promotion activities in Japan.
Ichiro Nakatomi graduated from the Tokyo University of Science and the Graduate School of Northeastern University in 1978. He received Ph.D. degree in research oriented to new drug mechanism at Gifu Pharmaceutical University in1988. He worked at Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for 12 years, and was responsible for the Pharmacology, Research and Developmental Planning and Business Development. He joined TheraTech, Inc. in the United States as Vice President in charge of Business Development and International Business Development during 1991-1999. TheraTech became a public company at NASDAQ in 1992. He also acted as President at TheraTech Japan during 1993-1999. He resigned TheraTech in 1999 due to M&A by Watson Pharmaceuticals (currently TEVA). He established NanoCarrier Co., Ltd. with two other University Professors and started real activity in 2000. He acted as President and CEO of NanoCarrier, which became a public company at Mothers of Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2008. He also acted as Board of Directors at iPS Academia Japan, Inc. at Kyoto University (IP business company under Nobel Prize Winner of Professor Shinya Yamanaka) during 2008-2014 and at its spin-out company, iPS Portal, Inc. during 2014- 2016.
As social activity he served as President of LES Japan during 2014-2016, Vice President of LES International during 2016-2018 and President Elect during 2021-2022. He received the Entrepreneur of the Year Japan 2002 Award. He was a member of Intellectual Property Strategy Project within Cabinet Secretary, member of Industry-Academic-Government Promotion Committee at Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
