On April 26, 2012, LES Chile president Felipe Claro, along with a few LES Chile members will attend the inauguration of the new Chile Patent and Trademark Office Headquarters.

Recently, LES Chile (LES Chile) and The Embassy of the United States of America in Chile organized a series of workshops for Chilean students aged 12 to 14 years, The workshops allowed students to design their own video games while discovering the importance of intellectual property protection.

The workshops gave attendees some insight into the amount of time and research invested in the development and design of video games, as well as the close relationship with intellectual property protection as a necessity of survival for companies in the sector. The youth had their first experience with tools of game design, such as Gamestar Mechanic or Kodu, guided step-by-step by speakers.

The social and economic impact that piracy has on the industry was discussed, together with the subsequent lack of stimulus to innovation and licensing generated under weak legal frameworks. Also discussed was the need to strengthen and promote measures to protect intellectual property rights and technology transfer.

The CEO of Amnesia Games also described the difficulties in producing video games in Chile, due to the absolute primacy of piracy and the presence of more secure and profitable international markets, which has resulted in greater licensing.

At the end of the event, attendance certificates were given to participating students, who were grateful for the experience.
